Join Us on July 13th: Honey Extraction Process at The Orchard

Updated: Aug 17

At The Orchard, we believe in celebrating not just the harvest of apples, but all the wonders of nature. One of the sweetest experiences we offer is learning about the honey extraction process from bee boxes. We are excited to announce that Madera's Queen Honey will be hosting a special demonstration of this fascinating process on Saturday, July 13th.

The Journey of Honey: From Hive to Jar

Step 1: Inspecting the Hives

The process begins with careful inspection of the hives. Beekeepers don their protective gear and open the bee boxes to check on the health of the hive. They look for signs of disease, pest infestations, and ensure the queen is healthy and laying eggs. This step is crucial to maintain a strong and productive colony.

Step 2: Removing the Frames

Once the hives are deemed healthy, the frames are gently removed from the bee boxes. Each frame is filled with honeycomb, where bees have stored their honey. Beekeepers use a bee brush to gently sweep away any bees still clinging to the frames.

Step 3: Uncapping the Honeycomb

The next step is to uncap the honeycomb. Bees seal each cell of honeycomb with a thin layer of wax. Beekeepers use a special tool called an uncapping knife or fork to carefully remove this wax, exposing the honey beneath.

Step 4: Extracting the Honey

The uncapped frames are then placed into a honey extractor, a large drum that spins the frames at high speed. This centrifugal force draws the honey out of the comb and it flows down the sides of the extractor. The extracted honey collects at the bottom, ready to be filtered.

Step 5: Filtering the Honey

To ensure purity, the honey is passed through a series of filters to remove any remaining bits of wax, propolis, or other impurities. This results in clear, golden honey that's ready for bottling.

Step 6: Bottling the Honey

Finally, the honey is poured into jars, labeled, and sealed. It's now ready to be enjoyed!

Join Us for a Live Demonstration

We are thrilled to invite you to witness this incredible process firsthand. Madera Queen's Honey will be conducting a live demonstration of the honey extraction process at Meadow Lakes Apple Farm. Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 13th, and join us for a day of sweet discovery.
